State Rep. Tom Kuhn (R-Troy) issued the following statement in response to the governor’s State of the State address delivered last night:
“I appreciate the governor’s recognition that Michigan must do better for our students. Ranking 44th in the nation in fourth-grade reading should concern every policymaker, regardless of party. In 2023, the governor and her legislative allies repealed Michigan’s Read by Grade Three law. That was a mistake.
“Real progress requires a renewed focus on proven literacy instruction and greater parental involvement in their children’s education. Parents are not bystanders. They are partners, and state policy should empower them with transparency, choice, and a meaningful voice in how their children are taught.
“I also welcome continued bipartisan support for Selfridge Air National Guard Base. Selfridge supports approximately 5,000 military and civilian jobs and contributes nearly $1 billion annually to Michigan’s economy. Securing the next fighter mission protects both our national security and thousands of working families in Macomb and Oakland counties.
“As we move forward, I remain committed to a budget process grounded in transparency, fiscal responsibility, and investments that strengthen Michigan’s workforce, infrastructure, and long-term competitiveness.”
